Disney's Main Street USA

As you’re running to your favorite attraction in the Magic Kingdom, have you ever stopped to wonder what magic Main Street USA holds? Is it an attraction like Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Space Mountain?
Technically, no. Main Street USA doesn’t move and thus, typically becomes an afterthought in tourist’s vacation plans. Yet, those that have experienced it best know that Main Street USA can hold some wonderful Disney surprises as well.
For instance, the entire street is actually only 4 buildings. Each one is designed to look like a separate structure, but it is actually only those four. As a result, tourists can stroll in between stores without ever having to go outside. And there are plenty of stores here to satisfy a shopper’s desire to find the perfect souvenir or gift. The best place to shop is on Main Street’s front corner at the Emporium. This is a HUGE place, so be sure NOT to separate inside the store. This shop is certain to have the souvenir you seek; if not, they can order it. If you have something particular in mind, when you first enter the store, ask a cast member to direct you. This shop will have everything from toys to costumes, t-shirts to caps, snow globes to mugs, pencils, autograph books, pens....you get the picture. Another favorite store of mine is the Crystal Arts. The glass figurines feature your favorite Disney characters and a variety of other designs. The store also has glass blowers doing demonstrations during certain times of the day.

And Main Street can be more than just shopping for souvenirs; it can also be about finding the perfect sweet treat. Main Street has an ice cream parlor, which features a Mickey Mouse cone with chocolate ears. With a variety of desserts, cookies, and sweets, the Main Street Bakery is the perfect place to satisfy a shopper’s sweet tooth. Here, you'll find both freshly baked goodies, as well as packaged candies and treats.
So like most of Disney World, you want to experience Main Street USA with fewer crowds and less waits to check-out, right? The majority of people head here as they are leaving the parks at the end of the day or waiting for the fireworks to begin. At closing time, the shops extend their hours to maximize the time that guests spend shopping there. Instead, I always recommend building a break into a day of touring the Magic Kingdom. Taking some time off in the afternoon, to swim at the resort pool or rest in your room, can rejuvenate your family for more activities at night. When you return in the evening and re-enter the theme park, spend some time exploring Main Street USA. The afternoon parade crowds will have departed and the nighttime fireworks crowds won’t have gathered yet.
The stores will be somewhat quieter for you to explore and locate the best souvenir, gift, or sweet treat. As a result, on your next trip to the Magic Kingdom, remember that while Main Street may not move as fast as Space Mountain, it does hold its own unique charm to discover. It can be a shopper’s paradise where you can indulge in the perfect sweet or discover the perfect memory.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

I have been fortunate enough to have attended Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party not once, not twice, but three times…so far. What is Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party you ask? It is a special admission event held at Disney’s Magic Kingdom from 7 pm – 12 am during select evenings in November and December where Disney takes all their holiday splendor to a new level. As you approach the park, you are greeted by cast members in special holiday costumes setting a festive mood before you even have a park map in your hand.

As you walk up Main Street USA you see the Castle lit up in icicles. You realize you feel something cold and wet on your face. Is that rain? No, it’s SNOW. Yes, SNOW. Christmas would not be complete without snow and Disney wants to make sure it feels like Christmas.

Throughout the park there are locations with free sugar cookies and hot chocolate (very good hot chocolate). The locations are easy to spot with their lighted posts and signs pointing you towards the treats. There are dance parties with characters located at Cosmic Ray’s and over at Ariel’s Grotto. Snow White and Belle also make special appearances with their princes all deck out in their holiday finest over by Peter Pan’s Flight. Of course you must stop by Mickey’s Toon Town to meet the Main Mouse himself. This year my friends and I came upon an unruly group of pirates over in Adventureland singing holiday songs more suited for Christmas on a pirate ship then in your living room. They were very entertaining and encouraged audience participation. Their lyrics were great and I wished they had a CD of their songs.

Characters and food are only part of what makes this evening special. Many of the parks rides and attractions are open and since the amount of tickets for this event is limited, the wait times are little to none. But you didn’t come to this party to just ride the rides right? There are stage shows throughout the nights in several locations which change yearly. This year a new show, “A totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show” debuted over at the new stage in Rockettower Plaza. Belle’s Enchanted Christmas takes place in Belle’s Fairytale Gardens where she tells her story of an enchanted Christmas plus “Celebrate the Season” show at the Castle Forecourt Stage.

You want to get a spot for Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas Time Parade. This parade is pure fun. Besides all the characters celebrating the season, the floats are something special as well. My favorite float is the one of the bake shop and as it passes by the smell of gingerbread cookies fills the air. This parade will make you feel like a child again.

If watching all those wonderful shows and parades was not enough, get ready for the Holiday Wishes Fireworks Spectacular. Disney is known for its daily firework shows but the Holiday Wishes show is not to be missed. Created just for the holiday season, the show is set to holiday music which leaves you both stunned and amazed. Who knew they could create fireworks in the shapes of gifts with bows or drums?

If you still have energy after all this fun, the shops on Main Street are bursting with holiday merchandise and will be very happy to have your purchases either delivered back to your resort or shipped home.

Each time I have attended Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, it has been different. The shows vary year to year, the characters change, the cookies get better and each experience is different. The first time I attended I focused more on the short ride lines. The second time I focused on the special events and shows and my third and most recent visit, I did a combination of the two.

Christmas at Walt Disney World is a special event on its own but Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party enhances the experience and is a true joy for children and adults.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

SpectroMagic

Spectromagic is a beautiful semi-nightly parade in Disney’s Magic Kingdom park in Walt Disney World. Focusing on the night aspect, the parade uses over 1 million points of fiber optic light to create a magnificent magical display. Don’t miss Chernabog fanning out his wings from The Night on Bald Mountain Fantasia sequence and also the most powerful villain in The Kingdom Keepers series.
There are also beautiful butterflies and even Scorer Mickey all lit up in hundreds of thousands of sparkling lights!
Watch for the lights to transform from multicolor to beautiful pristine white with the flick of Practical Pig’s paintbrush from one of Disney’s Silly Symphony episodes. Many other traditional characters also join Mickey at the end of the parade. The music score is written by John Debney and you will be humming it as you leave the park that night.

When looking for a place to view the parade, my favorite area is Main Street. Depending on how busy the park is, find a spot on the sidewalk 1-2 hours before the parade starts to get prime seating. While waiting, you can enjoy the Main Street atmosphere. One of my favorite spots is to sit in front of the confectionary store while waiting and smell the sweet sugary scent of cookies and candy while enjoying Main Street music. You can even make friends with other guests waiting with you! The second best spot, and generally less crowded is to find a place in Frontierland or Liberty Square. Sometimes, during busier periods, there is a second showing, which will usually be less crowded. Check your park guide map for parade times.

What will you Celebrate???

What will you Celebrate?
The Disneyland Resort is the perfect place to celebrate your birthday
~ No matter how old you are!

Just a couple of months before my 40th birthday, I decided that I wanted to celebrate my big day at my favorite place, Disneyland, and I am so glad that I did. The memories of My Disneyland Birthday Party will remain in my mind for many, many, many years to come.

After arriving at the Plaza Inn on Main Street, my family and I were escorted to our table. Several other families and groups were seated around the outdoor area too. All of us where there to share in the group birthday celebration. At our table, we found for each of us, a party hat, a souvenir birthday cup filled with lemonade and a Mickey shaped plate with a plain, circle-shaped yellow cake in the large circle, 3 colors of frosting in one of the 'ears' and Mickey-shaped sprinkles in the other 'ear'.

Soon we were introduced to Pat E. Cake, our host for the party. He explained that we were each to decorate our own cakes as we competed to create the perfect 'mouse-ter piece'.
One of the 'mouse-ter pieces' would be chosen as the 'Winner'.

The entire time we were decorating our cakes, Pat E. Cake strolled around the party singing clever songs, he spoke kindly to the birthday guests, families and friends, making each of us feel special in the group birthday party. His presence at the party created that special 'Disney Magic' that can only be found at a Disney park.

After much thought I frosted my cake carefully and added sprinkles to just the right places in hopes that my uniquely decorated cake would be selected as the 'Winner'.
Of course, each guest was a winner and we were each awarded
A Birthday Mouse-ter Piece Ribbon.
I wore my ribbon proudly!
We all enjoyed eating our delicious 'Mouse-ter Piece and then were surprised by a special guest appearance by Mickey and Minnie! All the birthday girls and boys were asked to stand with Mickey and Minnie while the other guests sang 'Happy Birthday' to us.
Then we each got our picture taken with Mickey and Minnie!

My 40th birthday party at the Disneyland Resort was a great experience!
My children have asked if they can celebrate their birthday at Disneyland ~ they are 9 and 12 years old.
I had to wait until I was 40 to celebrate mine. Hmm, we'll have to see! He He!

Seating for 'My Disneyland Birthday Party' happens daily,
reservations are required and there is a small fee.

Contact me and I will be happy to help you arrange a magical vacation to the Disneyland Resort, including a memorable birthday celebration at the place Walt Disney called
'The Happiest Place On Earth'.
